Tree-Trunk Bench, 1998

Three bronze casts of chair backs (tree-trunk excluded)

Problem I:
Documentation, Analysis and Abstraction
The Tree Trunk Bench by Bey is a striking fusion of nature and craftsmanship, celebrating the interplay between the organic and the manufactured.

This unique design consists of bronze chair backs, intricately cast to evoke classic furniture forms, which users are required to insert into a locally sourced tree trunk. By involving the user in sourcing the trunk, the bench becomes hyper-contextual, reflecting the specific character of its environment.

The act of insertion creates a dialogue between the industrial precision of the bronze and the organic form of the wood, bridging nature and industry. This functional artwork embodies collaboration and contrast, resulting in a deeply personal yet universally resonant design.

Problem II:
Spatial Manifestations
In a world where the lines between humanity and nature gently dissolve, this project envisions an interactive space that invites profound connections with wildlife. This structure serves as both a sanctuary for animals and a platform for human interaction. Visitors can ascend to the rooftop, where panoramic views of the forest canopy reveal the vibrant life thriving above.

Within the box, exploration beckons; as people touch the sturdy tree trunks, they become part of the ecsystem, encouraging playful encounters with small animals like monkeys and squirrels. This shared space nurtures a sense of kinship, blurring the boundaries between species. Steel elements weave through the design, offering a striking yet harmonious contrast to the natural surroundings, fostering a dialogue between nature and culture. These robust materials echo humanity’s presence while supporting the delicate balance of the forest. As visitors climb the steps, they elevate not only their bodies but their awareness, uncovering how their movements can influence the wildlife around them. This interactive experience transforms observation into a dynamic exchange, where human curiosity ignites the natural choreography of the forest, inviting both laughter and wonder.

Problem III:
Sighting Communal Sites
Sightings and Siting
Site: Seyðisfjörður, Iceland

Seyðisfjörður, Iceland, reveals a unique confluence of natural beauty and cultural richness. Nestled within a steep fjord, the town is characterized by its dramatic topography, glacial rivers, and vibrant Nordic architecture. The surrounding mountains create a sense of enclosure, while the proximity to the sea offers dynamic visual and climatic conditions.

Seyðisfjörður’s history as a hub for fishing and trade intertwines with its modern reputation as a cultural hotspot, hosting artists and events that celebrate its distinctive identity. This analysis emphasizes the site’s interplay of isolation and connectivity, inspiring a design response rooted in its natural and cultural context.

Artist Residency

The artist residency in Seyðisfjörður, Iceland, is designed as a dynamic space that bridges creativity, nature, and industrial heritage. Drawing inspiration from the town’s maritime history, the residency reimagines the spatial configuration of a ship to define its public and private realms. Public activities take place on elevated decks, symbolizing the ship’s open expanse, while private spaces are nestled below, echoing the protective enclosure of a ship’s hull. This interplay of openness and intimacy fosters collaboration and reflection, central to the residency experience.

The structure’s materiality and form respond thoughtfully to the Icelandic environment. The enclosure, inspired by traditional Icelandic turf houses, provides insulation against extreme weather while embracing a connection to the landscape. Below the datum line, materials are opaque, anchoring the structure to the earth, while translucent polycarbonate panels above the line allow natural light to filter through, creating a glowing presence at night. These luminous forms resemble floating light boxes, harmonizing with the undulating mountains and reflecting the ethereal beauty of the fjord.

Through its innovative design and integration with the site, the residency becomes more than a shelter—it is an immersive dialogue between the land, the sea, and the creativity it inspires.
